Plain Text Files vs Single Database File

I’m now into the Plain Text Files mode. Should I do the transition to a single database? Should I sacrifice the Spotlight integration? What I like most is the ability to search through the notes via the DevonNote app, although I hardly use it. Regarding my collection consists now of over 2000 notes, which is best?

Μόνο ένα

Ένα και μοναδικό email, ένα και μοναδικό twitter, ένα μόνο λογαριασμό Facebook. Και ένα email μονάχα - ξανά. Μόνο ένα.

Έχω τελείως διαφορετική θεώρηση για το ίντερνετ από ότι εσύ ¹ Χρησιμοποιώ το δίκτυο / τα νέα media για εργαλεία ΜΟΥ για να κάνω φίλους, γνωστούς με κοινά ενδιαφέροντα. Το Last.fm φτιάχτηκε για αυτόν τον σκοπό. Για να βρεις καινούριους γνωστούς και μουσικές. Αν δεν το κάνεις αυτό τότε δεν σου κάνει σαν εργαλείο. Θα σου πρότεινα αν θες να τα έχεις κρυφά, να χρησιμοποιείς μόνο το iTunes όπου και με ★★★★✩ θα μπορείς να κάνεις rating στα κομμάτια που σου αρέσουν.

Αν θέλεις το δίκτυο σύμμαχό σου στην κοινωνικοποίηση (βλ. αν χρησιμοποιείς τα social media) απλοποίησε τη ζωή σου χρησιμοποιώντας μόνο ένα email, μόνο ένα tumblr και μείνε σε αυτό. Οι αναγνώστες θα σου έρθουν όταν μείνεις πιστός σε αυτό. Απλοποίησε τη ζωή σου όσο μπορείς. Τότε θα μπορείς να την ελέγξεις αλλά και να την απολαύσεις. Χρησιμοποίησε ΕΝΑ λογαριασμό Facebook. Έχει friend lists για να τις κάνεις ό,τι γουστάρεις. Και αν σου πούν “δε βλέπω τον τοίχο σου, τους φίλους σου, τις φώτο σου” πες τους “ναι, το fb σου δίνει αυτή τη δυνατότητα να το κάνεις, και το έκανα”. Τέλος. Δικός σου είναι ο τοίχος και αν θες τον μαγαρίζεις μόνο εσύ. Δικός σου είναι ο λογαριασμός, τον κάνεις ό,τι θες. Χρησιμοποίησε ένα λογαριασμό σε όλα. Θα είναι τα πράγματα πολύ πιο εύκολα.

Κατηγορία email

Έχεις δει που όλοι οι μεγάλοι geeks τύπου Merlin Mann, Guy Kawasaki, Tim Ferris κλπ, έχουν φόρα παρτίδα το email τους στο ίντερνετ; Δεν φοβούνται το σπαμ. Το σπαμ φοβάται εκείνους. Δες και το πιο σημαντικό τιπ στο Gmail.

Πλέον στις νέες εγγραφές στις σελίδες χρησιμοποιώ το ένα και μοναδικό email και τίποτα άλλο, προκειμένου σιγά σιγά κάποια στιγμή να χρησιμοποιώ μόνο αυτό. Ευτυχώς το gmail έχει τέλειο spam φίλτρο, και ποτέ δεν έχει φτάσει σπαμ στο inbox μου.

Αυτά έχω να πω. Μου πήρε κάμποσα χρόνια να το καταλάβω.

Δοκίμασέ το για λίγο καιρό και θα δεις αν σου κάνει ή όχι.

Tags in Notational Velocity

I have been thinking of writing this piece for a while. Christian Tietze and Eddie Smith simply proved that time is ripe for this post.

I use Notational Velocity a lot; see here. That’s the reason yesterday I had 2200 text notes in my Notational Data folder.

I moved some of my reference stuff and my database was slimmed down to 1800 notes. NV had become cumbersome actually lately. SimpleNote in iPhone has turned from extraordinaire to useless. Anyway..

But why do I use NV so much?

I tag my notes a lot. Tagging means attaching three-letter words, mostly consisted of consonants so as to be mostly impossible to be contained in actual words. Here are a few examples of my tags:

• RFR: reference material
• QTN: quotations
• CNT: contact I’ve made through email/phone/web/face-to-face conversation
• TLF: telephone/fax info
• WRT: notes concerning some scribblings I must finish to publish
• IDA: one-line weird ideas
• LFL: personal life-log
• FNC: finance-related material

The tagging rules - tags rule

My set of rules is the following one:

• A note must contain at least one tag in the beginning of the filename.

But why do I write them at the beginning of the txt filenames? Due to a variety of reasons. The most important are the following:

• easy to sort by filename
• fast search by eye to distinguish untagged notes
• easy to batch-rename with A Better Finder Rename
• fast search through Finder by the searching in filename option
• easy to spot on SimpleNote on iPhone
• tagging this way make the notes instantly recognizable among others
• tags are added in a general to specific sequence (eg ‘RFR FNC CNT’)
• also this is the way I tag my files > you can imagine the endless possibilities here i.e searching for files concerning writing ideas in Spotlight means searching for “WRT IDA”. The results would both files and notes from my Notational Data folder.

Bonus info

when I type “bkmrk” TextExpander turns it into: »>«< (bookmark) and that’s the way I bookmark important points in my notes.
